For many years, I have been active as a Recording Director. I have specialized particularly in the field of choral and wind music. In this area, I have so far collaborated with ORF Oberösterreich, Tonstudio Franz Schindlauer, and Studio Baumann. In addition to the Upper Austrian and the Austrian Wind Music Association, I also take on the recording direction for various music associations as well as the Militärmusik Oberösterreich. My largest production to date was the “Mass of Mercy” by Thomas Doss, in which more than 150 participants were involved with the Balduin Sulzer Choir of the Linz Music Gymnasium and the voestalpine Wind Orchestra.

A successful sound production begins long before the first recorded note. The musical recording direction accompanies a production from the planning stage to the actual recording sessions. During the recording, the recording director is the critical ear outside the orchestra or choir. With score and recording log, he follows the musical events and pays attention to intonation, rhythm, interaction, balance, articulation, and musical expression. Discrepancies must be recognized quickly and reported back precisely. At the same time, the recording direction maintains an overview: Which passages have already been convincingly recorded, where is another take needed, and what can be resolved later in the edit?

Sessions lasting several hours demand high concentration from all participants. It is all the more important to create a concentrated and at the same time positive working atmosphere, to communicate clearly, and to motivate at the right moment.
